Diesel Solutions
Diesel exhaust is a leading source of toxic air pollution and our highest health risk in the Puget Sound. Studies show people living among major transportation corridors and port areas face the greatest risk – especially sensitive groups like children, the elderly, and with existing health problems. Through our Diesel Solutions program, we build partnerships with local businesses and governments and help them adopt strategies and technologies that reduce diesel pollution.

Diesel Exhaust & Your Health
Breathing diesel exhaust can cause serious health problems. The tiny particles in diesel exhaust are highly toxic.
-
Clean Diesel Truck Training
Clean diesel trucks (model year 2007 or newer) are ten times cleaner than older diesel trucks. But they also come with new engine systems that can cause problems if not maintained properly.
-
Maritime
Roughly 23 percent of the diesel exhaust in the Puget Sound region comes from the maritime sector. This sector includes diesel engines used in and around our region’s ports - powering drayage trucks, cargo-handling equipment, ferries, tugboats, shipping vessels, etc.
-
Off-Road Equipment
Nearly 40% of the diesel exhaust in the Puget Sound region comes from off-road engines, which includes construction, aircraft support, and cargo-handling equipment used at seaports and rail yards.
-
On-Road Vehicles
Roughly 34% of diesel exhaust in the Puget Sound region comes from on-road diesel engines, which include light-duty trucks and personal cars; medium-duty vans and small buses; and heavy-duty vehicles, such as trucks, buses, and waste haulers.
-
Rail
Roughly 3% of the diesel exhaust in the Puget Sound region comes from locomotive engines, including passenger trains, line-hauls, and switchyard locomotives.
